By the time you make first contact with your enemies you should have a pretty good-sized, experienced army going. Conquer independent towns and dwellings, and spam settlers to found new cities for you. Send your crows out early to scoop up treasure, but most importantly, expand. Also, if they get enough experience, scoundrels can be promoted to lesser shadow stalkers and eventually full on shadow stalkers. Until then, you will be relying on bards and succubi to basically steal other units into your army. Rogue needs to expand early and tech up to shadow stalkers ASAP. Your class is going to define your playstyle more than race in this case.
